SERVICES
Bates Information Services, Inc. offers four key service areas: 1) Customized business research, 2) Customized workshops & seminars for researchers, knowledge workers, information professionals and librarians, 3) Speeches for associations, conferences, and more; and 4) Coaching for independent info pros. The following is a brief overview of the firm’s services.
Business Research
Business research involves gathering the business intelligence companies need to make decisions on everything from R&D efforts and potential new markets to competition, technology trends, and more. Some recent examples of the firm's research work has included:
- Research to determine when Argentina began repaying its bonds
- Examples of particularly effective customer retention programs;
- Identification of key suppliers and vendors in the HVAC (heating / ventilating / air conditioning) industry
- How Generation X and Generation Y markets differ
- Analysis of telecom monopolies in Central and South America
Customized Workshops for Researchers
Many companies have their own research departments that periodically need a "tune-up" to learn additional techniques to be more effective in their information-gathering efforts. To that end, Bates Information Services offers workshops with very specific information to help these "knowledge workers" learn how to find the best business intelligence on the Web. These workshops can be custom tailored for the specific needs of an audience, and have been presented to members of the public, researchers within an organization, librarians, and local chapters of national associations.
Workshops for Special Librarians
Librarians who work within companies, associations, government agencies, and other non-traditional settings also find refresher courses on information gathering helpful, as well as seminars on how to market and promote their libraries and information centers. In general, the personality it takes to be a great librarian is not always the personality it takes to promote the internal library to constituencies within the organization. One of Bates Information Services’ most popular seminars to this group is "But I HATE to Market" which teaches special librarians how to market their information center within their organizations.
Speeches
Mary Ellen Bates is a dynamic, skilled, and experienced speaker, with more than 250 speeches to her credit over the past several decades. Speeches can be developed specifically for knowledge workers or other audiences as needed and specified. Most speeches are crafted for a 60-minute period, but can be developed in 20- and 40-minute lengths, as well as half-day and full-day workshops.
Coaching for Independent Info Pros ("Information Brokers")
There's a hunger for information in today's world, and more and more people are entering the field. For these people, Mary Ellen Bates offers coaching designed to help them learn the ins and outs of running a research business as well as move their business up to a new level.
